Lower Fort Garry National Historic Site is located just 50 km (30 miles) north of Winnipeg, on Hwy 9. Instead of reading dusty old plaques and your brochure, step back in time to the 19th century fur trade at the oldest stone fur trading post still intact in North America. Costumed interpreters will take you back to the mid-1800s as they re-enact events of the early days of this Hudson’s Bay Company post. Care to join in? Many times, interpreters need your help or opinion – so feel free to become part of history.
Original stone walls encircle the fort’s enclosure, the largest group of original 19th century fur trade buildings in Canada. Buidlings are furnished with original furnishings and artifacts, as well as housed by their ‘original’ occupants (acting staff, dressed in costume).
Lower Fort Garry is also commemorated as the place where Treaty #1 was signed between the Ojibwa and Swampy Cree of Manitoba and the Crown. In addition to that, Lower Fort Garry was used for many things by the Federal Government. It was Manitoba’s first penetentiary and insane asylum, as well as the first training grounds for the Northwest Mounted Police (Royal Canadian Mounted Police).
Although not required, a guided tour of Lower Fort Garry is an excellent introduction to the story of this historic treasure. Two orientation tours are given per day from July 2 to Labour Day (first Monday in September) at 11:00 am and 1:00 pm at no additional charge. Tours are also available at any time from May 15 to the Thanksgiving weekend (second Monday in October) for pre-booked groups. Lower Fort Garry offers general tours, tours for school groups, and tours for commercial groups. Special rates are available for school groups and commercial tour groups. Reservations are recommended for all groups coming to the site to ensure the site can accommodate your needs. Reservations can be made by calling the site at 1-204-785-6050 or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org .
